How to open an MD file
MD stands for Markdown, a way of writing formatted text with plain characters: # for headings, ** for bold, - for lists. Developers use it for documentation, and AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude write their answers in it.
Because it's plain text, any text editor can open it. You'll just see the symbols instead of the formatting.
How to open an MD file
Notepad opens .md files but shows the raw text, or only basic formatting in recent versions. To see tables, math and code formatted, drop the file into the viewer at the top of this page. To edit long files often, VS Code shows a preview with Ctrl+Shift+V.
